Resources

It’s not enough to be unracist, we need to be anti-racist. I know I personally have a lot to learn, so I thought I would share any resources I have found – if there’s anything I should add, please let me know on Twitter! There’s no order to this, but I’ve tried to group shopping and influencer themed items together.

If you only read a few things, read these…

A huge list of anti-racism resources for white people – something I intend to work through

A Google folder full of documents and resources – this will cover pretty much everything you want to know

An excellent list of ways you can help – by @dehyedration

Another page of really useful resources from Pinch of Yum

Some UK specific things…

A directory of UK Black influencers – my feed could be more diverse and yours could be as well I bet.

Hello ? I asked on my stories if anyone would be interested in some pointers on how people in the UK can respond to the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and overwhelmingly the answer was yes. This is just a small collection of ways you can take action. I would like to make it clear that I’m not an authority on this issue and the people to turn to and follow are the people mentioned throughout the post. This is simply a way of summarising small steps you can take if you’re feeling as useless as I am at the moment. We can always do more. These are some of the ways. EDIT: you can email the county office at [email protected] ? EDIT 2: I have been alerted that Robin Diangelo is not a person to support. I apologise for including her in the list of recommended books and she will not be promoted on my page.

PLEASE STOP POSTING WITHOUT READING THE CAPTION ????READ CAPTION???? The website I suggested WONT SEND copy and pasted / repeated messages and MPs frequently ignore them because they get flagged as duplicates!! Once you have the MP’s name you should be able to find a direct email for them via google. I cannot stress this enough – Please EDIT THE TEXT and send via direct email!! Or even via post if you have a printer. Because potentially it might not get through otherwise – some MPs will have a spam filter for duplicates. ALSO please include full name and address – your MP can ignore it if you don’t prove you are a constituent!!! PLEASE INCLUDE THIS WHEN SHARING. ***LINK TO EMAIL TEMPLATE IN MY BIO. PLEASE USE THIS INSTEAD OF DMing ME – this version is updated to include BAME report and institutional racism*** if you can obviously- literally been getting hundreds of messages and I can’t keep up? PLEASE STOP RECOMMENDING ME ON POSTS ABOUT ANTI RACISM EDUCATION! I AM WHITE!!! I am NOT an anti racism page – I am anti capitalism (capitalism and white supremacy just go hand in hand, so you can’t really address one without the other!) PLEASE USE YOUR PLATFORMS TO AMPLIFY BLACK AND MINORITY VOICES!!!!!!!! I HAVE TAGGED POC OWNED ACCOUNTS IN PLENTY OF MY OTHER POSTS!!! [edit: deleting comments from white people expecting a pat on the back for participating. Also deleting thank you comments cause it makes me cringe. I didn’t do it for thanks, I did it to take the pressure off black anti racism educators] #saveourdemocracy #ukpolitics #politicsuk #britishproblems #labourparty #tories #libdems #greenparty #uknews #latestagecapitalism

For the influencers…

Karla put together a document of scripts that we (influencers and non influencers) can use to ask brands what they’re doing.

?? Influencers LISTEN UP ?? I see so many of you asking how you can help, and what can you do if you’re unable to show up to protest, or donate. While there are a variety of great organizations you can support and elevate on your platform, the biggest impact you can make from your desk is CONNECT with your platform, connecting with your brands, and challenge them to make a difference. Challenge them to use their voices to speak up about what’s right. INFLUENCE CHANGE. In collaboration and support of voices like the wonderful & beautiful Tiffany (@thenorthernbelleofthesouth) I have put together a guideline/template for use when navigating these discussions with the brands you’re working with. I will be highlighting a number of posts and videos about the importance of seeing brands speak out and ways you can do this. Pay close attention to these organizations as we move forward. We as influencers & the organizations we partner with MUST utilize our voices to bring forth change. ?? We have made it very simple for you to tailor this to your needs & contact these brands. If you’re wanting to use this guideline word for word DM me and I’ll copy paste it to you directly. Tiffany said it best, If you can pitch a brand for a sponsored post you can ask them what they’re doing to help. Please go visit @thenorthernbelleofthesouth page, follow her, share her videos, and repost these guidelines ?? #westandwithyou #blacklivesmatter #speakup #westandtogether #influencers #dothework #bethechange #makeadifference #blacklivesmatter #standup #speakout #justiceforgeorgefloyd #minnesota #florida #blm #plussizebloggers #plussizefashion #bodypositive #plussizemodels

Instagram Influencing Has Long Had A Diversity Problem. This Blogger Says Now Is The Time For Change. It’s up to all of us to call out these things as we come across them. It’s not enough to just turn away or subtweet.

The truth. It’s uncomfortable. But it’s my reality. As the conversation of racial injustice continues and more and more of my friends and fellow influencers are asking deep questions and being educated, I thought I’d create something that has been weighing heavily on my mind. This influencer space is what I am surrounded by every day, and the past week has just amplified the need to do so. much. more. Brands and fellow influencers: we have SO much work to do. Now more than ever is the time to shout about change in this industry. Besides the 30+ years of my own racism I’ve experienced in my life, the words you see above are things I’ve felt and heard ever since I started my blogging journey. Why is this still happening? I ask myself time and time again. So, the only thing I can do is spread awareness right now. I want us all to move the needle and progress forward.

Grace made some pledges that we can all do while Alison gave more resources -these are things that all influencers and bloggers can be doing, recommending the information that we’re learning from.

Social media has been a bit overwhelming since I first put up this post so it has taken some time for me to post this. On Friday, I shared this content on Twitter after I felt the conversations online were like screaming into an echo chamber. I wanted to provide those who wanted to support and be an ally with practical tips to move forward and make a change in our society. I am still somewhat surprised and overwhelmed by the reception so please take patience with me at this time. — For a note on who I am to those who have followed me from Twitter, my name is Mireille. I’m an assistant editor and I do freelance writing, PR and sensitivity reading and other bits on the side. I am extremely passionate about diversity and inclusion, and everything I have shared is not new knowledge to me. From as far back as I can remember I’ve been campaigning, fighting for equality and supporting and working with black owned organisations. I have worked in the diversity and inclusion space for around four years and I have been equipped with knowledge, skills etc through that work as well as through wider, intensive reading and being raised by a Jamaican mother who has a degree in Women’s Studies. I felt as a mixed race person who was emotionally capable despite the current situation that I could use my learned experience, skills and compassion to offer this advice to allies and anyone else who was seeking advice but didn’t know where to turn. This is now on my stories as a highlight so please feel free to share from there or here. — A small reminder that this took emotional labour and POC, especially black people are not here to teach you everything. When I said ask how you can support, I meant on a personal level as a friend etc. I hope this toolkit provides you with the starter info you need but there are genuinely people more experienced than me who warrant your listening to – please go and follow @nowhitesaviors, @laylafsaad, @rachel.cargle, @ckyourprivilege, @iamrachelricketts, @thegreatunlearn, @renieddolodge, @ibramxk + a few more: @akalamusic, @katycatalyst + @roiannenedd who all have books or resources from many more years of experience. _ Peace, love and light ?????
