Making Sushi


Sushi. You either love it, or hate it. (Although most people who tell me they hate sushi have never actually had it, they just don’t like the idea of fish and seaweed.) When I have the time, I like to make my own sushi, and thought I’d share how I do that with you. I was shown how to make sushi by @guriben who you should all follow because he doesn’t like people to know he is nice really.

This isn’t a super authentic recipe – but it is pretty damn delicious and easy to do. The awesome (and probably quite obvious) thing about making your own sushi is that you can have anything you like in there. Alex doesn’t like wasabi, so I don’t put that on for his rolls. I prefer smoked salmon if I am having fishy rolls, so that’s what I use.

Oh No Yo! Sushi


I love sushi. So its kinda obvious that I like Yo! Sushi. As with any high street chain, you know what to expect, you know you wont get any nasty surprises, and you can expect the level of service to be quite decent.

I recently went to London, and had a bit of time to kill before my train back to Bristol so headed over to the Yo! Sushi concession in Paddington Station.
Let me start this review by saying that I understand that this is a stall mostly used by people grabbing a bento style box on the way past. So its not going to be as good for eating in as my local branch in Cabot Circus, but at least I can grab a few yummy things off the belt, right?

Well, no. Considering that it was 3pm on a Friday afternoon, the belt was poorly stocked. I assumed that given the time of day, more people would be doing the same as me – grabbing a late lunch whilst waiting for a train home. The branch was quite empty of people eating in though – that should have been a sign, but perhaps other people were put off by the lack of food.

So, if the food was rather lacking, maybe the great service made up for it. Definatly not. There were two people waiting on, a guy who seemed to be the manager, and a woman who seemed more interested in talking to some friends of hers that had sat at the bar than acutally serving people. She was rude and abrupt, not only to myself, but to the other diners around me.
I’ve been visiting Yo! Sushi since I found it randomly in London in 2002, and was really pleased when the Cabot Circus and Cribs Causeway branches opened (previously I’d have to travel to Birmingham to get a sushi fix!). Although the service in those branches isn’t what I had come to expect from previous visits to the Trafford Centre or Bullring branches, we always have a good time.

Whenever I am out shopping with friends, and they ask where to go for lunch, my first choice has usually been Yo! Sushi, but I’m so put off recommending them now, I’d rather go to McDonalds!
