So after the fiasco (Isn’t that such a good word?) of the mixed up dates, I eventually saw Kick Ass. Unfortunatly Alex was finishing off packing to move to his new house (much closer to Bristol, only 10 mins on the direct bus from my house. Marv.) so I took along an old colleague, Nick, with me. I had to do this for my own sanity, as Nick was bombarding me with emails and DM’s begging to go.

The screening in one of the smaller screens at the Vue was pretty packed by the time we got there 10 mins before the start time. We were subjected to the usual trailers, including one from the company that arranged the viewing. The reason why these companies have advanced showings is that they want people to give their opinions, and hopefully that gets other people to go see the movie when it comes out.

Well, here I am, telling you that you *have* to see this movie. In fact, I’m willing to go see it again with Alex because it is that awesome. As you’ve probably guessed by now, I’m not your typical reviewer. So, because he has to earn his ticket somehow, I’ll let @nickbrompton tell his version

I’m not sure when I first became aware of Kick Ass, probably one of the upcoming film previews in Empire Magazine, of which I have been an avid reader for years & a subscriber for a while. I usually take quite a lot of notice of things when they get excited as I tend to find their taste similar to mine – they like art house but sometimes a crap 80′s action movie is just what you need, but Kick Ass didn’t really stick in my head.

Maybe it was because I hadn’t seen director Matthew Vaughan & screenwriter Jane Goldman’s other collaboration (Stardust, though it’s now recorded to watch at home), maybe it was because it stars Nic Cage, & all Nic Cage films for the last 5 years have been utter bobbins. Whatever it was I wasn’t excited, there were big movies like Avatar & Clash of the Titans to look forward to.

This all changed over the winter when I clicked on a link from a twitter feed, not sure who’s it was, maybe Kevin Smith or Edgar Wright but it took me to a trailer featuring Nic Cage & a young girl who uses very very bad language. I watched it at work & nearly fell of my chair, half with laughter, half with shock. The trailer was surprising, funny, violent & utterly brilliant. It went round the office like wild fire, everyone was excited. I took it home & showed my girlfriend & housemate, who both instantly became excited.

Fast forward, spring is in the air, birds are singing & @hayles tweets that she might have a spare ticket to a preview of Kick Ass – I got excited & replied I’d go if there was one spare. This is Thursday night, apparently the Boy might not be able to make it, I cross my fingers & try offering bribery. Then it turns out the Boy can go on Monday night & all my hopes & dreams are dashed (not really but you get point).

Now avid followers of this blog will by now know that Hayley got the days wrong – the preview wasn’t until Tuesday night & by Tuesday afternoon it was confirmed once more that the Boy can’t go – hooray for our hero I hear you all not shouting! I get there, we buy treats, the cinema is packed & we don’t have the greatest seats but soon the trailers are done & the film begins.

2 hours later we emerge, smiling, laughing, wanting to buy jet packs & wet suits. The film is by turns, funny, violent, very sweary, visually inventive and has a great soundtrack.

It runs a fine line between quite touching realism of the life of a teenage boy & fantastical sequences of beautifully choreographed ultra violence. Each set piece is inventive & unique, all the characters get their turn at being funny, there are endless brilliant comic book references (I think repeat viewings will only find more) & Nic Cage does his best work since Con Air (& nearly redeems Adam West from Family Guy joke).

I loved the film, I want to write & share each funny line with you, to describe in detail the action & to swear as only a purple haired pre teen can. But I won’t. It wouldn’t be fair. You should go see this film yourself, you should take your mates & have the most fun you will have had in the cinema for ages, then you should go see it again so it makes loads of money & Hollywood takes notice & starts making more films like this.

If you liked Zombieland, or Spaced, or you just want a great couple of hours then you won’t get much better than this.

Theres a website called See Film First, which I am a member of. It gives away tickets for advance screenings of films. I signed up for it a while ago, but either the film offered wasn’t something I was particularly interested in, or it clashed with prior arrangements (always the way )
However, when tickets for Kick Ass were offered, I had to say yes. We saw “From Paris With Love” a few weeks ago, which had the trailer for Kick Ass before it. It didn’t look too bad, despite Nic Cage being in it.
(By the way, “From Paris With Love”? YAWN. John Travolta trying to look scary and shooting up lots of stuff. You can tell it was the boys choice.)

So you’re probably a bit confused at this point. I’m talking about Kick Ass, but the title of this post is about the Bounty Hunter. Yeah. About that.
So we arrange to meet at the cinema after I’d finished work. I’d printed off the ticket I’d received 2 hours before the start time and headed into the Vue.
“Hi, I’m here to see Kick Ass?”
“Er, thats tomorrow”
Yes, despite the original email offering the tickets saying that the Bristol showing would be on Monday, the ticket date was for Tuesday. Oops.
So Alex arrived, and we had a look at the other offerings that the Vue had on. It was all pretty dull if I’m honest, kids movies and boy films (and after Alex’s last two choices of films of “From Paris With Love” and “Brooklyns Finest” turned out to be complete crap boy movies, I’m not trusting his choice of films anymore)
We decided to head back towards the centre, to Cinema de Lux in Cabot Circus to take another attempt at their “The “Lot” desert. (Its £11, but it is every desert on their menu on one plate. Nom nom nom.)
The choices were Green Zone in a normal screen, or the Bounty Hunter in the Directors Lounge.
We like the Directors Lounge. Its just that little bit more awesome than watching a film at home. For one thing, there are no reclining leather love seats with little tables on the sides at home.
We had a World platter to nom, followed by The Lot desert, which once again beat us. Damn you tasty uneaten treats!
The movie itself, well, that was kinda dull. There, I said it. The plot idea is reasonable, bloke is a bounty hunter, journalist ex-wife has he?r bail revoked because she’s chasing after a news story, he tries to drag her back to the police station, they remember why they were in love, news story is resolved, happy ending. (Sorry, I think I’ve just given it all away. No big loss.)
The plot was built up nicely, but the ending felt, I don’t know, a bit rushed? To me, it seemed like “here’s the bad guys, gun time, the end” Ok, so I’m no screen writer, but why build up all that tension only for it to end in five minutes?
Overall, it was a movie that whilst enjoyable to watch, isn’t one I’ll be buying on DVD to watch again and again.

I had just finished reading Belle de Jours third book, “Playing the Game” when I saw Kate’s review of “Petite Anglaise“, by Catherine Sanderson. It reminded me that particular book was sitting on my bookshelf and had only been read once, so I picked it up and read.

If you didn’t already know, both books began life as blogs, “Petite Anglaise” being written by an English woman living in Paris about her daily life, and attracted a large amount of visitors quickly. “Belle de Jour” was also about her daily life, but whilst “Petite” was an office worker, “Belle” was a call girl who was very open about what she did.

The book version of “Petite Anglaise” is the story of how Catherine started her blog, met a bloke via her comments section and started having an affair with him, and dealt with the aftermath of leaving her long term partner and coping with becoming a single parent.

“Playing the Game” is, in Belles own words, “a parallel universe for Belle and her mates”. Its what would have happened if she had decided to give up being a call girl and become a typical office worker. Except, well, its Belle, so theres no such thing as a typical office worker.

I had not read “Petite Anglaise”‘s blog before reading the book, but this did not affect my enjoyment of the book. I had read “Belle’s” blog since the very start, and this probably helped in my understanding of the charectors, but on the other hand, since I had read her other books as well, it may not have been needed.

In their own way, both books are very well written. They are in different styles (PA is more of a story, whilst PtG is written in a diary style) and both are enjoyable reads. The only negative part to Belle’s book is that it seemed far too familiar – I couldn’t work out if I had read this book before (unlikely, but possible) or had read sections of it before either in her other books or on the blog.

* Yes, I know that Belle de Jour has a real name, but it feels more suitable to refer to her as her pseudonym in this context.

So I’ve been meaning to review the wonderful Goldbrick House since last August when we went for our Accounting Geek Reunion 2 and loved it lots then. However, I’m a lazy arse. I thought you guys knew this by now?

Friday was Alex’s (sorry, aka The Boy) birthday, so as part of his celebrations, I took him to Goldbrick House for a meal.

We ate in the restaurant, which was pretty full at half 7. We ordered some wine, and nibbled at the bread while trying to choose from the yum menu. I’d had a head start (I’d been gazing at the menu at work while my colleagues disappeared downstairs to Cosmo for lunch. I may have been sulking slightly that I was missing out on deep fried mushrooms. Still, looking at the menu helped me forget about the MSG overload they were getting)

Eventually, Alex chose one of the starters from the specials menu, which was some sort of pasta parcel (Ha, pass the parcel. Oh shh.) and I did the traditional girl thing of forgoing the starter in preference of a desert. I’d been eyeing up the jelly and ice cream on the menu from their website all day – I was far too excited about having jelly and ice cream for pud pud (Ahem. Pudding.)

For mains, Alex had the rabbit (Rabbit leg stuffed with tapenade, with an olive and potato cake, rocket salad and a light dressing), and I had the chicken (Corn fed chicken breast served with garlic gratin potatoes, honey-roasted parsnips and buttered kale) which was so yum.

It came to pudding time, and I was upset to see that jelly and ice cream wasn’t on that night. Disaster! I chose the vanilla cheesecake with strawberry coulis (mmm, awesome) and Alex chose the chocolate torte, served with blood orange sorbet. The cheesecake was awesome, but Alex found the torte just a little bit too rich. (Hence the discussion about ordering the same desert. He thought it was smug. I thought it was sensible.)

After all that delicious food (and I suppose great company and good conversation ), it was time to pay. For a starter, two mains, two deserts and two glasses of wine (he was driving, I feel guilty if I drink lots when he is sober!), it came to just under £60. (In their latest newsletter, there is a promotion offering 50% off main meals, which is what reminded me to book (with that offer) but for some reason it wasn’t taken off.)

Still, if you’re looking for a different, but elegant meal out, why not give Goldbrick House a try? I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

On Monday, I was very lucky enough to be given a ticket to see the ballet Sleeping Beauty at the Hippodrome. The week before, Kate asked via Twitter if any one would be interested in going with her, as she has won two tickets.

We were sat in the grand circle, quite central but just off to the right of the stage, which gave us a great view of the stage. It was the first night, and so the place was pretty full but we didn’t have anyone in the row in front until 10 mins into the first act when a bloke with a head so large it blocked about 20% of my view sat in front. I affectionately nicknamed him “Fat Head” and luckily he moved after the interval.

I had never been to the ballet before so didn’t really know what to expect. For one thing, I didn’t actually know that there was no dialogue, just music and dancing.

The dancing was pretty awesome, but lets face it, if you’re going to watch a ballet by the Russian State Ballet of Siberia, you kinda expect that they’re not going to be completely crap! I have to admit, the costumes were a lot more interesting to me than things like the backdrops. The princess’ wedding outfit reminded me of She-Ra’s costume. And lines like that prove why I’m not a reviewer.

Crackerjack has a proper type review here, and the company touring the country at the moment, so have a look at this page to see if they’re performing near you soon!

I love sushi. So its kinda obvious that I like Yo! Sushi. As with any high street chain, you know what to expect, you know you wont get any nasty surprises, and you can expect the level of service to be quite decent.

I recently went to London, and had a bit of time to kill before my train back to Bristol so headed over to the Yo! Sushi concession in Paddington Station.
Let me start this review by saying that I understand that this is a stall mostly used by people grabbing a bento style box on the way past. So its not going to be as good for eating in as my local branch in Cabot Circus, but at least I can grab a few yummy things off the belt, right?

Well, no. Considering that it was 3pm on a Friday afternoon, the belt was poorly stocked. I assumed that given the time of day, more people would be doing the same as me – grabbing a late lunch whilst waiting for a train home. The branch was quite empty of people eating in though – that should have been a sign, but perhaps other people were put off by the lack of food.

So, if the food was rather lacking, maybe the great service made up for it. Definatly not. There were two people waiting on, a guy who seemed to be the manager, and a woman who seemed more interested in talking to some friends of hers that had sat at the bar than acutally serving people. She was rude and abrupt, not only to myself, but to the other diners around me.
I’ve been visiting Yo! Sushi since I found it randomly in London in 2002, and was really pleased when the Cabot Circus and Cribs Causeway branches opened (previously I’d have to travel to Birmingham to get a sushi fix!). Although the service in those branches isn’t what I had come to expect from previous visits to the Trafford Centre or Bullring branches, we always have a good time.

Whenever I am out shopping with friends, and they ask where to go for lunch, my first choice has usually been Yo! Sushi, but I’m so put off recommending them now, I’d rather go to McDonalds!

I’m trying to think what else I can say to persuade you to watch it, but its probably best if you see the trailer first.

The songs in each episode are a good balance between chart hits and older tracks. I love the mash ups, in particular Mr Schusters mash up of “Don’t Stand So Close” and “Young Girl” (works surprisingly well I think!)

http://www.popjustice.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4172&Itemid=206

Glee is going to be shown in the UK on E4 early next year, but the pilot will be shown at 9pm on Tuesday 15th December. Which is the episode with Don’t Stop Believing. You can see why I love it.

Its probably easiest to compare it to a text messaging service, except that its free (and whilst its in its trial period, the app is free as well). Its also been compared to BlackBerry Messenger (haven’t actually used it myself – would love a iPhone version, but its never going to happen is it?)
Yes, its got a few problems at the moment (messages not updating, and the odd wiggly text input bit) but I can live with those (well, maybe). If you’ve got Ping!, my id is hayles (well, of course!)
Its a nice, easy to use app for Twitter and does pretty much everything I want to do on Twitter! It would be nice to have groups, but I can just use Brizzly if I want to catch up with those I’m following in that way. Theres also a free version so you can see if its what you want – if only some other apps did the same (Tweetie, I’m looking at you. I’m still annoyed I paid for you.)

For my other birthday meal, a few of us headed up to Cosmo on the Clifton Triangle. Cosmo opened up at the beginning of the year, but we hadn’t really had the chance to go there before. I’d never been to an “all you can eat” place before, so it was all a little strange to me. You pay the price for the meals at the beginning before you get shown to a table, then pay for drinks when they are brought to your table. Its quite a large restaurant, able to seat over 250 people apparently.

I have never seen so much prepared food just waiting to be eaten! The restaurant has 6 “live cooking stations” (where a chef stands all day and makes a certain food – sounds a bit dull to me!) – a teppanyaki hotplate, yakatori barbecue grill, dim sum bar, wok station, fresh noodle bar and freshly prepared sushi counter. They also had a section for curries, a section of Chinese food and also a counter full of side dish type things (rice, chips and for some reason mini cocktail sausages?) I haven’t even mentioned the desert section yet – a table full of fresh fruit, a bar of lots of mini deserts and of course the chocolate fountain.

The food was quite good, pretty much as you would expect really! The waiting on staff were efficient – perhaps a little too efficient – at clearing the plates from us: some of our party had barely finished by the time they were trying to collect the plates from us! We did have a small problem with getting drinks brought to us where someone forgot to actually send the order to the bar, but it was sorted out in the end.

The prices of the buffet vary depending on when you go, but we went on a Thursday evening which cost £12 each. I probably would go again, but I think it would be somewhere best to go to as a group rather than as a couple.

For my birthday, I was lucky enough to be taken by Louise and Nathan to ZeroDegrees, a microbrewery located on Park Row in Bristol.

I hadn’t been to ZeroDegrees before, although had sampled their beers at various Bristol festivals and had passed the building many times. Despite this, I was still a little surprised to see that the building does contain the whole brewery! (Why was I surprised, I knew this!) The atmosphere of the restaurant was noisy, unsurprisingly as it seemed to be very popular with large groups. Despite this, the food was brought to us quickly.

The starters were large enough to be main courses, which might be a problem for some people, but since I hadn’t eaten properly since Thursday, it was fine! I had calamari with sweet chilli sauce, which I love but not many restaurants seem to serve!
The main course menu is quite heavily pizza based, with some quite unusual toppings. They say that they “shared a vision of redefining the traditional concept of pizza by translating UK’s favourite flavours and tastes on to a great pizza.” I had a Mango Tandoori Chicken pizza, which was so good, very fruity and not too spicy.
Desert was quite basic, a New York style baked cheesecake with strawberry coulis and ice cream. Yum!

The prices of the food isn’t too bad, about £9 for the pizzas – as with many places, you order the main and thats just what you get – in my case, a large pizza on a plate (that although was really nice, and not burnt or anything, was really difficult to cut with the cutlery provided!) We had debated on getting side orders, but when the mains came out, it was a good thing we didn’t!

The main reason people go to ZeroDegrees is because of the beers they serve. I had a pint of a random French blonde beer that they were currently brewing – when the waiter was telling us the different beers available, he turned his nose up slightly when he said about the French beer. It was a good blonde beer, not too heavy but still quite yummy. Nathan had the IPA, which was a good ale as well. I’ve previously tried the Mango beer that they are serving at the moment which reminded me of Hoegaarden more than the French blonde beer did. ZeroDegrees has certain beers that they serve all year, and then specialty beers that are done for a few months. They have a marvelous animation on the website which fascinated me about how the beer is made (you can see it here)

Overall, the food was good, but its not really the sort of place you would go if you’re looking for an intimate evening. They are able to deal with large parties quite well from what we saw, so book a place if you’re looking for somewhere to go as a large group!

I thought I’d start off my Bristol reviews thing with the place where I have been the most, and where I take most of my friends. But thats because its SO DAMN GOOD.

Rocotillos is an American diner located at the top of Park Street. Its a tiny tiny place (seating about 30 people?) and serves breakfast until 12pm then burgers, etc till close.

Helen‘s thumb showing how ace the shakes are.
L-R, Banoffee and Chocolate&Hazlenut

However the real reason any of us go to ‘Tillos is because of the nomtastic (and yes, that is a word) milkshakes. The milkshakes are the best I’ve ever had – thick enough for the straw to stand up in the glass, but not too thick so its difficult to drink. The milkshakes can be considered a meal in themselves but that’s not a reason to ignore the menu!

My most recent visit was over the Bank Holiday, we had driven to Bristol to pick up our friends and they had already decided we should go to Rocotillos for lunch since they enjoyed it so much last time they were in Bristol.

I had the chicken quesadilla and my favourite milkshake, chocolate and hazelnut. Nathan had a bowl of chilli with a Crunchie Bar and honey shake and Adam had one of their burgers with fries and a chocolate and hazelnut milkshake as well (When you order a burger at Rocotillos, thats all you get on the plate – a giant, grease dribbling homemade burger in a bun with the typical collection of salad shiz).

The plates were soon cleared, because even if you are getting full, you can’t stop yourself from finishing the meal! These are not meals that have been made more fancy than they really are. These are basic meals which are just really really good.

The prices are quite reasonable – £3.25 sounds a lot of a milkshake, but once you’ve tried one of them, you’ll think its totally worth the price. Meals cost about £7, with sides being extra. Rocotillos probably isn’t a place to go for lunch every day, but its worth it as a special treat every once in a while.

Last weekend, Zoe & James and Helen & Dave came to Bristol to see me, and to go to the Banksy v Bristol Museum exhibit thats been causing massive crowds and queues along Queens Road for a few weeks now. My friends Eman and Rachael joined us, and we joined the massive queue – at 10am, the queue was at the point of an estimated three hour wait. Oh dear! Of course, this being the first weekend of August, it rained, which made queueing just that little bit more fun (um…no). We were in the main queue for about two hours (going up a hill. stopping. going down a hill. stopping. Repeat a LOT. My legs were in agony for days!) then we finally reached the front, where we went to a shorter queue for about half an hour.

Everyone was so excited once we made it into the acutal museum, but we stepped into the main hall and stopped. People infront of us were shuffling along, and it felt like we were back to queueing again! We decided to go into the Natural History exhibit, which is on the left as you walk in through the doors. Someone said that there was a hidden exhibit in there, so we had to look, didn’t we? We found this little guy hiding out with the swans.

On a day trip I think?

This turned into a bit of a treasure hunt, we were trying to find all the of “hidden” exhibits. I think my favourite was the beaver who won a fishing award!

Yay! He won!

While we were queueing for the museum, I was surprised at the amount of people who had brought their SLR’s, and was sure they would be asked not to use them inside. I’m not sure if this is a standard museum thing now, but as long as you didn’t use the flash, the museum was happy for photos to be taken.

This had been turned into a bit of a shrine with church candles in front!

This then brought about another puzzle for me. Whenever I’ve been to museums before, I’ve been used to people getting very up close and personal to the paintings, taking an age to pore over every brush stroke, then moving on to the next painting. Not so at the Banksy exhibit. It seemed that people were just walking up to a painting, taking a quick photo with their camera phone or whatever, and then moving on. It seemed very odd to me! People were more interested in taking their own little piece of Banksy stuff home with them than actually looking at the item in front of them. Whilst he is known for his stencil work, he is actually very talented, with the ability it seems to be able to emulate another style of painting.

Of course this was a favourite of mine!

Eman was very annoyed at one point – there was a large painting of the Houses of Parliament, but instead of human MP’s, it was filled with chimps and the occasional gorilla. Its a massive painting, so we stood in front of it for a little while, noticing little things that most people probably missed. As we moved away from the painting, we heard two girls who were about our age ask “Why are all those monkeys in court?” We had assumed most people knew what the Houses of Parliament looked like!

One of these things is not like the others

I really enjoyed the exhibit – it was also my first time visiting the City Museum (which my friends found surprising until I pointed out that I didn’t grow up in Bristol!) and would recommend it to anyone really! There was a huge variety of people there – from young children to grandparents!

This was next to the Darwin exhibit, the caption was “Here are examples of potential new animals that may evolve on earth”

The animatronics were possibly the biggest attraction – I liked this little bunny who was so busy doing her nails!

Zoe wrote her own account of the weekend which can be found here. It was so nice to finally meet her! (Also to see her husband, who I haven’t seen since we finished uni in 2006!)

I know, I know. I’ve said many times before about how much I love Polaroids. And although many people complain about the crappyness of the camera on the iPhone, I still use it because its just so handy to be able to upload it to Twitpic or onto this blog.

Unfortunatly sometimes the pictures from the iPhone are a bit washed out, a bit meh. Thankfully I have found an application called ShakeItPhoto for just 59p which acts like Poladroid

The only criticisms that I have of the application are that it doesn’t save the original picture so you can compare the differences, and that you can’t convert pictures you’ve previously taken. But I have Poladroid if I feel that strongly about the last one!

On Saturday, Ed and I travelled up to the Vue at Cribs, where we watched Yes Man. Due to some bad timing of everyone wanting to go at the same time, and Ed having issues with self service machines, we got into the screen as the trailers for other films were playing, when you can’t really see where you’re going so well. Because of this, and my unreasonable wish to not have someones smelly feet near my face, we sat in the second row back at the very front. We were practically lying down to watch the movie, but that was quite comfortable! (well, for me anyway!)

Yes Man is based on the book by Danny Wallace, one of my favourite writers/actors/whatever he is. Basically, the book is about Dannys decision to say Yes to everything he is asked in a six month period. And on the whole, it seems to turn out quite well.

The movie is a more fictionalised version, with Jim Carrey as the main character, Carl. Carl never goes out or does anything, then is persuaded to go to a conference where he is encouraged to say YES to everything. Because of the things he says Yes to, good things happen, but of course theres a twist.

I really loved Zooey Deschanel in this, she’s not only pretty but she can actually sing! Her band “Munchausen by Proxy” performed the sort of music I actually like, and I can’t stop listening to their tracks from the sound track. The soundtrack is mainly made up of songs by the Eels, a band I tend to forget about sometimes but I do love their tracks when I hear them by chance.

I’d recommend that you go to see this movie, its very very funny, although there is a slightly stomach churning scene with an old lady. I had to hide from the screen!
